A heavy rain alert is currently in effect across the Fiji group as a slow-moving trough of low pressure continues to impact the region. The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned that this weather system is expected to bring prolonged cloud cover, rain, and occasional thunderstorms over the coming days.

Forecasts predict intermittent rain throughout Fiji, with the likelihood of heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Significant rainfall has already been recorded in the last 24 hours, with several weather stations reporting notable totals. Among these, Nanoko experienced the highest rainfall at 81.5 millimeters, followed closely by Wairikicake with 80.0 mm, and both Dreketilailai and Udu Point each recorded 79.5 mm. Other recorded amounts include 70.0 mm at Keiyasi, 60.5 mm at Bukuya, 57.5 mm at Tubenasolo, 55.0 mm at Rarawai, and 52.0 mm at Dobuilevu.

Authorities have raised concerns that the ongoing heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding in vulnerable areas, such as informal settlements and business districts. Furthermore, Irish crossings may become impassable, leading to potential traffic disruptions. The risk of surface flooding is also elevated in urban areas with inadequate drainage systems, and wet roads combined with decreased visibility during heavy rain increase the chances of road accidents.

As the community prepares for the expected weather conditions, residents are urged to stay informed of updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
