The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning as a tropical depression, known as 09F, is currently located about 255 kilometers northeast of Cikobia and 290 kilometers northeast of Udu Point. The depression is expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone within the next 12 to 18 hours.
As of 6 AM, the depression is producing maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h. However, forecasts suggest that these winds could increase to 65 km/h, with gusts potentially hitting 90 km/h in the coming hours. The system is currently slow-moving and projected to track south towards Fiji.
The warnings coincide with previous advisories for disturbances such as TD09F, which had a low to moderate chance of developing into a cyclone. Similarly, earlier disturbances brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, emphasizing the importance of community preparedness. Residents in regions affected by these systems, including the Northern Division and northeastern Viti Levu, are advised to remain vigilant, as strong winds and heavy rain could result in localized flooding and rough seas.
The community spirit traditionally seen during such weather events reflects a shared resilience and readiness to support one another. As they prepare for the potential challenges ahead, residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather reports and adhere to safety measures.
This situation presents an opportunity for the community to come together, reinforcing their preparedness and unity in the face of nature’s adversities. Keeping informed and aiding one another during this time can significantly lessen the impact of potential weather hazards.
