Tropical Cyclone Rae has been upgraded to Category 2 and is currently situated approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Taveuni, Fiji, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service. Meteorologists expect the cyclone to intensify into a Severe Tropical Cyclone, Category 3, later today.
TC Rae is currently experiencing maximum sustained winds of 90 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 130 km/h. Once it strengthens to Category 3, winds are expected to increase to 120 km/h, with gusts hitting 170 km/h. Moving south-southwest at about 15 km/h, the cyclone is on a direct path towards the Lau group.
In anticipation of the severe weather associated with TC Rae, a hurricane warning is in effect for the Southern Koro Sea and Southern Lau waters. Additionally, a storm warning has been issued for the Northern Koro Sea, Northern Vanua Levu, and Northern Lau waters. Strong wind warnings are applicable for the rest of Fiji’s waters.
Fiji has a history of community resilience in the face of such storms. Past experiences, such as during Tropical Disturbance 01F, emphasize the importance of solidarity and preparedness. Local leaders continue to encourage residents to secure their properties, prepare emergency supplies, and stay informed through local updates.
As Fijians brace for potential challenges, their collective response could prove pivotal in mitigating the storm’s impacts and navigating the impending severe weather with unity and strength. Despite the threatening conditions, the hope lies in the community’s solidarity, which historically has helped them weather these natural adversities.
