The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a warning regarding a persistent trough of low pressure hovering over Fiji, which is expected to bring widespread showers, including the possibility of heavy downpours, through today and into Sunday.
In a bulletin released early this morning, meteorologists indicated that this weather system, combined with prevailing southerly to northeast winds, is contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions, particularly affecting the eastern and central regions of the country.
Residents from the Coral Coast to Navua, the Greater Suva–Nausori–Tailevu corridor, Ra–Naitasiri, Serua–Namosi, as well as the Southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, should prepare for occasional showers and isolated heavy rainfall. The forecast also extends to the Lau and Lomaiviti island groups, including Kadavu and its nearby smaller islands, which are anticipated to encounter similar wet weather.
Meanwhile, other parts of Fiji are expected to largely remain dry, with only isolated showers likely in the afternoon or evening hours.
The bulletin warns that isolated thunderstorms and significant rainfall could result in flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, urging communities to stay vigilant.
Looking ahead, the forecast for Sunday is expected to mirror today’s weather, suggesting continued showers and the risk of heavy downpours in the same vulnerable areas, emphasizing the need for awareness and readiness in affected communities. This alert serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of taking precautions during such conditions.
