A low-pressure system is making its way towards Fiji, prompting officials to issue a heavy rain alert specifically for the Northern Division and Yasawa Group. This system is expected to strengthen and possibly enter Fiji’s waters by Sunday, bringing with it the threat of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and heightened risks of flooding and landslides.

Salaseini Daunabuna, the Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural & Maritime Development and Disaster Risk Management, highlighted the critical need for individual and community preparedness as Fiji heads into cyclone season. She stated, “Being prepared for such events is crucial.”

The National Emergency Operations Centre, along with various Divisional Emergency Operation Centres, is actively monitoring the situation. With potential evacuations planned for flood-prone areas, authorities are already setting up evacuation centers. The Fiji Police Force is on standby to offer assistance as necessary.

As heavy rain falls, residents are advised to minimize travel due to increased flooding and landslide risks. Community leaders have been urged to ensure that locals adhere to official advisories and remain indoors during severe weather conditions.

Motorists should be particularly cautious and avoid flooded roads. For real-time updates regarding road closures, the Fiji Roads Authority’s Facebook page, along with the Emergency Dashboard, are being recommended as reliable resources. Additionally, families are encouraged to prepare by stocking up on essentials such as food, water, power sources, first aid kits, and medications to maintain self-sufficiency in case of service disruptions.

Furthermore, the community is reminded to prioritize safety, especially for vulnerable individuals. Staying informed and prepared is essential as the weather situation unfolds.

In the weeks leading up to this event, Fiji has experienced similar heavy rain warnings due to a persistent trough of low pressure. These severe weather patterns underscore not only the unpredictability of Fiji’s climate but also the vital importance of being prepared. With collective efforts, communities can navigate these hardships and lend support to one another during challenging times.
