A trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers is positioned over the Fiji group and is expected to affect the country through later tomorrow, while a west to northerly wind flow prevails. The main impact will be periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms, with some areas seeing heavier falls that could cause localized flooding.
Through to midnight tomorrow, Northern Division and the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu — including areas from Tavua–Vatukoula, Ra–Rakiraki, interior Ra–Ba–Nadroga/Navosa, interior Serua–Namosi/Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Greater Suva/Nausori–Tailevu, Sigatoka–Korolevu, and the Coral Coast to Navua — together with the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms. Elsewhere there will be cloudy periods with some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with heavy falls possible in those convective events. Isolated heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The outlook for Monday shows the trough’s influence continuing across the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms. Other districts should see cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers and isolated storms. Winds are expected to ease and shift to a moderate east to southeast flow on Monday, and seas will remain moderate.
Local expectations include occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms for Navua, Suva and Nausori, with temperatures around a 23°C minimum and 30°C maximum and a similar picture into Monday with isolated heavy falls possible. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should see cloudy periods with showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls at times (Min 23°C, Max 30°C), with similar conditions Monday. Northern and eastern towns such as Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni may experience occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and temperatures generally in the mid-20s to low 30s. The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups will see showers and isolated thunderstorms, with heavier afternoon or evening storms more likely over the Mamanucas. Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu also face occasional showers and isolated to few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls. Rotuma remains under the trough’s influence with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh northwesterly winds and moderate to rough seas.
People in low-lying and flood-prone areas should be prepared for brief but intense downpours and possible flash flooding. Mariners and small craft operators should take caution — seas are moderate around most islands and moderate to rough around Rotuma — and expect a gradual wind shift from west–northwest to east–southeast into Monday.
