The Fiji Amateur Boxing junior and youth team has demonstrated notable progress this year, according to head coach Cam Todd. He described a recent two-day competition against four teams from New Zealand as highly successful, with Fiji showing improved performance compared to the previous year.
Although New Zealand secured more victories on the second day, Fiji managed to excel on the first day in terms of wins and losses, with the overall medal count being closely contested between the teams. This improvement marks a positive trend from last year’s events, which is encouraging for the future of Fiji’s boxing community.
Todd expressed his gratitude for the local support and praised the quality of the fights during the competition. He particularly noted the advancement of junior youth boxers, who had performed excellently in Tahiti, winning all their matches.
The enthusiastic presence of young spectators is seen as a hopeful sign for the future of boxing in Fiji. Todd mentioned that New Zealand clubs also had a beneficial experience collaborating with Fiji, appreciating the competitive spirit of the event.
Emphasizing the need for further development, Todd plans to focus on improving fundamental techniques by working closely with local clubs and coaches. He aims to enhance outreach efforts in the upcoming months and intends to establish a local club to facilitate more hands-on training.
Looking ahead, the Fiji Amateur Boxing team is preparing for the Golden Gloves competition, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday in Nausori.
This progress signifies a bright future for Fiji’s boxing scene, as the continued efforts to strengthen local talent and foster growth are crucial for the sport’s development. The focus on youth engagement and community support is particularly inspiring, fueling optimism about the next generation of boxers in Fiji.
