The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has announced the suspension of the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand, in light of a recent investigation involving the late boxer Ubayd Haider. The decision comes as a result of concerns over the welfare of boxers under the promotion and a lack of cooperation from Chand in adhering to agreements with the BCF.
Eroni Loganimoce, a member of the BCF board, emphasized that the safety of boxers is their top priority, and steps are being taken to prevent incidents similar to Haider’s tragic case in the future. The suspension has been in effect since Friday, November 29.
This suspension underscores the BCF’s commitment to the safety and well-being of boxers in Fiji. While the situation is unfortunate, it provides an opportunity for the BCF to reassess and strengthen regulations in the sport, ensuring a safer environment for athletes moving forward. Although difficult, such actions are vital for promoting accountability and fostering a culture of safety in combat sports.
By taking decisive action, the BCF sends a strong message that the health and safety of boxers will not be compromised.
