The Boxing Commission of Fiji has officially suspended South Pacific Boxing Promotion following a grave incident involving the death of local boxer Ubayd Haider, also known as Nathan Singh. The tragic event unfolded in October when Haider collapsed after a match against Runqi Zhou in Nadi and unfortunately did not survive the subsequent surgery.

In a press conference held recently, the Boxing Commission confirmed that the suspension of the promotion’s license is effective as of November 29. Eroni Loganimoce, a board member and ring supervisor, stated that the suspension stems from the promoter’s failure to adhere to essential agreements. Despite explicit instructions to avoid making comments on social media, the promoter chose to disregard those directives.

Loganimoce highlighted several concerning issues, including discrepancies in meeting medical obligations on fight day, such as inadequate ambulance services and the necessary drug testing as mandated by the International Boxing Organization (IBO). Additionally, the promoter’s attempts to create discord within the board raised alarms regarding the safety and well-being of boxers associated with the promotion.

The Boxing Commission underscored that the safety of boxers is their top priority and they are committed to ensuring that no further incidents occur, like the unfortunate passing of Haider.

This suspension serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of maintaining safety protocols in sports, particularly during combat sports where risks are inherently higher. The action taken by the Boxing Commission emphasizes their commitment to the health and safety of athletes.

In summary, while the situation is tragic, the Boxing Commission’s decisive action is a step towards safeguarding the future of boxing in Fiji. By holding promoters accountable, they aim to foster a safer environment for boxers and prevent any similar incidents from happening moving forward.
