At just 18 years old, Ratu Mikaele Antonio Ratavo is already living the rugby dream that many aspiring athletes can only imagine. The talented front-row player from Naiselesele, Taveuni, is leaving his mark in France, where he is being recognized as one of the country’s promising young prospects, with hopes of becoming a future player for the France XV team.
Ratavo, who proudly represents his Fijian heritage, is currently developing his skills with Montpellier Hérault Rugby. His journey began on the dusty fields of Fiji, where he first learned the sport while attending Drasa Avenue School in Lautoka and later Veiuto Primary School in Suva. His early promise shone through, but it was after his move to France that his career truly gained momentum, shaped by discipline and dedication.
He successfully navigated France’s respected rugby systems with teams like Biarritz and Massy, earning himself a spot on Les Jeunes Bleus and representing France at various youth levels from Under-15 to Under-18. A pivotal moment for Ratavo was being selected for the France Under-17 side at a tournament in South Africa. Although the team withdrew from the competition due to a tragic incident, the experience deepened his understanding of rugby’s core values of brotherhood and respect.
Ratavo continued to develop his game with USON Nevers in the Pro D2 league before moving to ASM Clermont Auvergne. There, he played a crucial role in helping Clermont win the National U18 Elite Crabos Championship and made his debut for the France Under-18 team against Georgia in 2025. His rise didn’t stop there; he progressed to the France Under-20 team, competing in matches against South Africa and Wales as the 2026 U20 Six Nations approaches.
Despite his achievements, Ratavo remains humble and deeply rooted in his faith and Fijian heritage. He shared that his strength comes from God, referencing Romans 8:18 as a source of motivation. “I am thankful to God for everything. He is my source of strength, knowledge, and wisdom. Without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he expressed.
In addition to striving for personal success, Ratavo aims to bring pride to his family. “My everyday goal is to achieve higher and make my parents proud,” he said, expressing gratitude to his mother Ilisapeci, his late father Pio Ratavo, and his stepfather Adriu Delai for their unwavering support. He also acknowledged his maternal grandparents, Asesela Tuitai Sila and his late grandmother Virisila Sila, who played significant roles in his spiritual upbringing.
For young Fijian athletes aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Ratavo stresses the importance of obedience and humility, encouraging them to always listen to their coaches.
From a small village in Taveuni to the elite rugby scenes of France, Ratu Mikaele Antonio Ratavo’s inspiring journey highlights how talent, faith, and humility can pave the way for success, with his story just beginning to unfold.
