The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) is taking significant steps to enhance aviation safety in response to the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 on June 12, 2025. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, announced a series of proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safety of Fiji’s airspace.

The Boeing 787-8 operated by Air India crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad due to both engine fuel cut-off switches being inadvertently moved to the CUTOFF position, which resulted in a catastrophic loss of power. In light of this incident, Gavoka commended India’s rapid actions for mandatory inspections of Air India’s 787 fleet, which he described as a transparent approach.

To further strengthen aviation safety protocols, CAAF is conducting targeted safety audits of Fiji-registered aircraft, including the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A330 and A350 models. These audits will specifically focus on crucial safety components such as engine fuel cut-off mechanisms, Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems, emergency shutdown protocols, and black box capabilities.

Gavoka highlighted the alignment of these audits with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, reinforcing the commitment to compliance and preparedness. “We will not wait for a tragedy to happen before acting,” he stated, emphasizing the authority’s dedication to aviation safety.

Additionally, CAAF is reviewing Fiji’s accident investigation protocols to ensure they meet ICAO standards, aiming for quick, independent, and effective responses to aviation incidents. Along with extending condolences to the families affected by the Air India crash, Gavoka assured that the government is committed to enhancing the aviation industry’s safety framework.

This proactive stance reflects a broader effort that includes previously announced initiatives such as the launch of a new corporate plan for CAAF and an impending review of Fiji’s aviation laws to modernize and strengthen current regulations. These efforts are expected to bolster Fiji’s position as a reliable aviation hub in the Pacific region.

The ongoing improvements signify a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s aviation sector, aiming to build trust and safety in air travel while enhancing collaborative efforts among stakeholders in the industry.
