The Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s tournament has evolved significantly since its inception, transforming into a cornerstone of grassroots rugby in Fiji. Founded by Jone Vuki, the event has seen remarkable growth since it commenced in late 2007. Vuki reflects on this journey, stating, “The tournament started very small in 2007 and has now grown to be the biggest in the world.”
A key aspect contributing to its unique appeal is the tournament’s diverse offerings. Vuki highlighted that it does not just focus on sevens rugby; it also features men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s and mixed netball, and a junior rugby competition running concurrently. This multifaceted approach attracts a wide audience, allowing individuals from various backgrounds to participate and enjoy the festivities.
This year’s event showcases a substantial increase in participation, with 21 men’s teams, 16 under-21 teams, and five women’s teams competing in a celebration of sports that began yesterday. The Wairiki 7s, which has now run for 18 years, continues to provide a vibrant atmosphere for both participants and spectators, culminating in its conclusion tomorrow.
The ongoing success of the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s illustrates the power of community and sports to unite people, making it not just an event, but a cherished annual tradition that fosters camaraderie and sporting spirit in Fiji.
