The Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s has once again thrilled fans with three days of high-energy rugby, a success that is a testament to the hard work of its organizers led by Vika Vataniyaragi. Vataniyaragi’s journey began with a mere $200 and a determination to uplift the tournament after joining the organizing committee ahead of its third year.

When Vataniyaragi entered the fray, the tournament’s financial situation was dire. With only $200 left in the bank after the first two events, the organizing team faced overwhelming challenges. Yet, rather than succumb to despair, Vataniyaragi and her team resolved to turn things around by tapping into community support.

The organizing committee initiated a series of BBQ fundraisers, with five couples working tirelessly three days a week to cook and sell food. This community-driven approach not only provided much-needed funds but also promoted a strong social message, encouraging participants to “Say No To Drugs.” The involvement of the Police Band during these events helped attract crowds, turning BBQ sales into a significant source of revenue that ultimately facilitated the third Labasa 7s tournament.

Thanks to their efforts, the committee managed to revitalize the tournament’s finances, leading to a healthier financial state for the forthcoming events. Vataniyaragi attributed this turnaround to teamwork and the willingness to adapt, including changes to the tournament director and committee members. She received valuable support from KVT, whose guidance proved instrumental in navigating challenging decisions during this transformative period.

Beyond the rugby action, the tournament aspires to serve a larger purpose. Vataniyaragi shared their long-term vision of constructing a community hall and gym, having already begun negotiations for land acquisition. Despite the ongoing challenges—such as employment issues within the committee and increased operational costs—the team’s determination remains unwavering.

The continued sponsorship from Fiji Bitter has also played a crucial role in their progress. After a scare about reduced sponsorships last year, Vataniyaragi felt immense relief and gratitude upon learning that the tournament would receive support once again.

From humble beginnings of selling barbecue to managing one of the region’s premier rugby events, Vataniyaragi’s journey embodies resilience, unity, and community spirit that align with the ethos of the Labasa 7s. Her story is not only one of survival but also of hope for a brighter future for the community through sports and collaboration.
