The Ministry of Agriculture has reported a notable increase in demand for agricultural commodities in Fiji, surpassing levels seen in previous years despite the country’s relatively small population. Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, attributes this rise to evolving market needs and changing consumption patterns among consumers.

To address the heightened demand, the government is making concerted efforts to enhance agricultural production, provide support to farmers, and strengthen food security measures. Tunabuna emphasized the importance of boosting both the quality and quantity of agricultural output, noting that the local market has significant requirements that need to be met.

To facilitate this growth within the agriculture sector, the government plans to increase investments aimed specifically at supporting farmers, particularly focusing on young and emerging farmers. The Minister highlighted various programs being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, alongside initiatives from the Ministry of Women, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, which are designed to empower young farmers, youth, and women in agriculture.

This initiative reflects a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s agricultural landscape, presenting opportunities for growth and innovation while ensuring that local supply can adequately meet consumer demand. As the government reinforces its commitment to the agriculture sector, it aims to cultivate a sustainable and prosperous future for farmers and the wider community.
