Environmental organization Eco Guardians Fiji is calling on the public to take accountability for their waste during the New Year celebrations, particularly at the country’s beautiful beaches. Joanna Caine, the Chief Executive Officer and Project Manager of Eco Guardians, has expressed concern over the increasing amounts of litter found along popular swimming and picnic spots, stretching from Lami to Pacific Harbour and across the Galoa corridor. This issue appears to be more pronounced during festive times.

Caine highlights that while families are encouraged to enjoy the stunning beaches, many locations are left polluted with items such as disposable diapers, plastic bottles, takeaway containers, and food waste. She noted, “I saw that the beach was so beautiful and it was clean. But then when there were so many cars parked on the sides… the amount of rubbish… especially diapers and plastic bottles and takeaway packs.”

She emphasized that although beaches should be a source of enjoyment and tranquility, irresponsible littering detracts from the natural beauty that attracts visitors in the first place. Furthermore, Caine warned that litter not only diminishes the experience for others but can also attract stray animals and pose risks to marine life.

To combat this issue, Caine urges beachgoers, particularly those arriving by car, to take their rubbish home. She also stresses the importance of proper diaper disposal, pointing out that takeaway containers, food scraps, and barbecue bones are frequently left behind, contributing to the mess on the beaches.

Local resident Sailosi Natadra, 16, echoed Caine’s sentiments, noting that the same littering problems plague beaches each year. “It’s important to maintain cleanliness, especially along picnic spots. It hurts us, the landowners; it’s an eyesore whenever we see rubbish along shores after picnic outings. Take your rubbish with you, don’t leave it behind for us to clean up. Please dispose of your rubbish properly,” he said.

Eco Guardians Fiji reinforces that safeguarding the environment necessitates a collective effort and heightened awareness, especially during busy holiday periods when beach visitation increases. This initiative not only seeks to preserve the natural beauty of Fiji’s coastlines but also fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship among visitors to ensure that these cherished locales remain pristine for generations to come.
