Badminton Fiji representative Abel Caine is optimistic about the country’s potential to excel in badminton at the Olympic Games, provided that athletes receive the right training and support. During a recent competition held at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva, Caine observed a significant display of talent that underscores badminton as an underutilized sport in Fiji.
Caine shared that there are upcoming initiatives aimed at introducing and promoting badminton, especially in remote areas of Fiji. He emphasized the importance of strategically preparing for the 2032 Games, which will take place in nearby Brisbane, Australia. Over the next seven years, Caine suggests that efforts should be directed toward discovering and nurturing young talent in schools, as well as exposing them to various tournaments, including nationals and international competitions in New Zealand, Australia, and New Caledonia.
For this vision to materialize, Caine highlighted the necessity of adequate support and sponsorship to effectively develop and foster the selected athletes. His plea underscores the importance of community and governmental involvement in sports development, which could pave the way for a brighter future for badminton in Fiji. With a concerted effort and investment in training programs, Fiji could position itself as a competitive force in the sport on the global stage.
