Retailers across Fiji are gearing up for the annual back-to-school sales, as parents aim to complete their shopping early amid rising costs. The demand for uniforms, stationery, shoes, and bags is expected to surge as families prepare for the new school year.

Jitesh Patel, President of the Suva Retailers Association, emphasizes the importance of early preparation, noting that it alleviates pressure on both parents and retailers while ensuring that supplies remain consistent during this busy season. He mentioned that many businesses have already stocked their inventories and are offering promotions and competitive pricing to assist families in managing their budgets.

Patel stated, “Most of the shops we know are prepared for back-to-school because a lot of parents buy early as well. In the city, those heavily involved in school products have set up and are ready for business to begin.” He also highlighted the collaborative efforts between retailers and suppliers to maintain inventory levels and keep prices competitive, ensuring that parents have access to the necessary supplies.

Furthermore, Seema Shandil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji, announced that the Council has started monitoring school-related products to verify the legitimacy of special offers. “We want to ensure that those claims are accurate, as ‘specials’ should mean prices lower than current ones,” she explained. Shandil acknowledged that back-to-school expenses can significantly impact household budgets and that the Consumer Council is actively recording prices to guarantee that discounts are genuine, ultimately protecting families’ financial well-being during this critical season.

The proactive measures taken by retailers and oversight by the Consumer Council aim to create a more supportive shopping environment, helping families navigate the financial challenges associated with the back-to-school period.
