Weightlifting Fiji’s head coach, Henry Elder, has voiced concerns regarding the financial strain imposed on athletes selected to represent Fiji at international competitions, particularly the upcoming Pacific Mini Games. Recently, the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee announced a hefty $3,000 levy that each athlete must pay to compete, leading to significant discussions about the implications for athletes’ participation.

Elder described the situation as “unfair,” highlighting that many athletes struggle financially, with some even taking loans to meet the payment requirements. He stressed the need for urgent action to alleviate this burden, especially considering the challenges athletes already face in balancing training and financial limitations.

Moreover, Elder pointed out disparities in the treatment of athletes; while national teams often enjoy support like hotel accommodations and allowances, those representing Fiji at regional events tend to face harsher conditions, often being housed in classrooms with minimal assistance.

This sentiment echoes a broader challenge faced by various sports teams in Fiji as they prepare for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau from June 29 to July 9. Similar reports highlight that Team Fiji as a whole is aiming to raise $3.5 million to fund its athletes, with each federation navigating their own financial hurdles related to these levies.

In response to these challenges, initiatives such as fundraising campaigns are being launched across multiple sports disciplines in Fiji. Athletics Fiji, for instance, has started a lottery system to help cover these costs, emphasizing the community’s critical role in supporting athletes’ journeys.

The collective response from athletes, federations, and the broader community reflects a strong spirit of determination and resilience. It underscores a unified effort to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the potential success of Fiji’s athletes at international competitions. With continued support and proactive measures, there remains hope for enriching Fiji’s presence in sports on the global stage.
