President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu today held a significant ceremony at State House to commission two new ambassadors representing Fiji. Mr. Jesoni Vitusagavulu was appointed as Fiji’s Ambassador to the State of Israel, while Mr. Laitia Tamata was designated as Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations (PRUNOG).

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the close family members of the newly appointed ambassadors, marking a moment of pride and recognition for both diplomats.

Mr. Vitusagavulu comes to his new position with a wealth of experience in diplomacy and economic development. His past role as Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Mexico between 2005 and 2007 saw him lead the rebranding of the Fiji Embassy and foster relationships that facilitated job opportunities for Fijians in Canada.

Mr. Tamata brings an impressive background as a development practitioner and legal advisor, with expertise in international law and governance. His training in international diplomacy and protocol from 1987 to 1988 has equipped him with a strong foundation in areas such as human rights, juvenile justice, environmental law, and climate change. He has also gained experience serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the South Pacific. Currently, he acts as a Senior Manager at the Fiji National University and has taught various law-related subjects at the University of Fiji.

The appointments of Vitusagavulu and Tamata are seen as key steps in advancing Fiji’s engagement on the global stage, with their extensive backgrounds promising to enhance diplomatic relations and international cooperation for the nation. This new leadership reflects Fiji’s commitment to strengthening its representation and contributions in both regional and international forums.
