President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu recently commissioned two new ambassadors during a formal ceremony at State House, marking a significant milestone in Fiji’s diplomatic efforts. Jesoni Vitusagavulu has been appointed as Fiji’s Ambassador to the State of Israel, while Laitia Tamata will serve as Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and family members of the appointees, highlighting the importance of these new roles. Vitusagavulu arrives at his new position with a wealth of diplomatic and economic development experience. Previously, he served as Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Mexico from 2005 to 2007. His tenure in Washington, D.C., was notable for rebranding Fiji’s embassy and securing international support for employment pathways for Fijian workers.
In addition to his ambassadorial role, Vitusagavulu led the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau from 1996 to 2003, where he advanced the nation’s trade initiatives and played a crucial role in boosting Fiji’s ICT and audio-visual industries through enabling legislation and infrastructure development. His extensive involvement in various boards, including as Chairman of Food Processors Fiji Limited and the Agricultural Marketing Authority, underlines his leadership capabilities.
On the other hand, Laitia Tamata brings a robust background as a development practitioner and legal advisor to his new role at the United Nations in Geneva. His extensive experience in governance and international law has significantly contributed to various development initiatives throughout Fiji and the Pacific.
Tamata’s foundation in international diplomacy began with specialized training from the Fiji Army between 1987 and 1988, which prepared him for potential diplomatic postings. His education in international law has further equipped him to address issues related to human rights, juvenile justice, environmental law, and climate change. Moreover, his participation in the Law and Governance Advisory Committee of the Great Council of Chiefs demonstrates his commitment to advising on leadership and governance matters impacting the iTaukei community.
The commissioning of these two ambassadors signals a renewed commitment to strengthening Fiji’s diplomatic presence on various platforms, including bilateral, regional, and multilateral engagements. This strategic move is expected to enhance Fiji’s standing on the world stage and foster opportunities for collaboration and development in the future.
