The Public Service Commission has announced the appointment of Dr. Radika Kumar as the new Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Business Development, with the Prime Minister’s consent. PSC Chairman Luke Rokovada emphasized Dr. Kumar’s extensive qualifications and experience, stating that she brings over 18 years of national, regional, and international leadership within the fields of economic policy, trade, and data-driven decision-making.
Dr. Kumar holds a PhD in Economics, as well as multiple master’s degrees, including an MBA and a specialization in Big Data and Business Intelligence. She has also earned a Certificate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Oxford, showcasing her commitment to advancing her expertise in modern economic challenges. Her training includes advanced studies in trade and policy through the World Trade Organisation and other esteemed international institutions.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kumar has gained invaluable experience as a public servant across various ministries in the Fiji Government and has represented the nation on international platforms such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. Additionally, since 2019, she has provided senior advisory services with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Dr. Kumar stated, “My focus will be on building a resilient and globally connected economy where MSMEs thrive, youth and women participate fully, digital innovation drives growth, and all communities—urban, rural, and island—benefit from opportunity. I look forward to working closely with Government, the private sector, civil society, development partners, and all stakeholders to build a better future for current and future generations.”
Dr. Kumar’s official start date is set for May 4, 2026, as she takes over from Mr. Peni Sikivou, who has been acting in the position. Her appointment is seen as a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and innovative economic environment in Fiji.
