The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MDVA) of Fiji, in partnership with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), successfully conducted the 2025 Fiji – New Zealand Bilateral Defence Talks (BDTs) at the newly established Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC) in Lami. This marks a significant evolution of the previously known Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP) Talks into a broader and more strategic dialogue encompassing both military and civilian aspects of Fiji’s defense operations.

The 2025 BDTs served as a vital platform for enhancing cooperation between Fiji and New Zealand, where representatives discussed shared regional security concerns and future strategic engagements. Central to the talks were discussions on addressing emerging challenges through enhanced defense collaboration and coordinated initiatives over the coming year.

The New Zealand delegation was chaired by Brigadier Andy Shaw, Assistant Chief of Strategic Commitments and Engagements, along with Katie Roche, Director of Pacific from New Zealand’s Ministry of Defence, and other representatives from the New Zealand Defence Force. Prior to the BDTs, the New Zealand team visited RFMF facilities to gain insight into operational needs, paving the way for a deeper partnership between the two nations.

Both nations reaffirmed their enduring commitment to strengthening their defense relationship, emphasizing mutual respect and shared strategic interests for regional stability in the Pacific—similar sentiments echoed in previous discussions between Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and New Zealand officials.

Moreover, the proactive approach of both nations towards collaboration signals promising prospects for regional stability and partnership. This dialogue and cooperative spirit enhance the hope for a secure and prosperous future in the Pacific region, reinforcing ties that contribute positively to both Fiji’s security landscape and international relations.

This progressive collaboration reflects ongoing efforts in nurturing partnerships that address regional challenges and indicates a strategic acknowledgement of the need for teamwork in tackling issues that impact the Pacific community. Through such engagements, both nations foster a resilient environment for growth and stability amidst evolving global dynamics.
