Fiji is actively seeking to enhance its healthcare collaboration with Indonesia, aiming to improve access to medical training and services for its health professionals. This initiative emerged during the meetings held by Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health, at the Global Cervical Cancer Elimination Forum in Bali, which took place from June 17 to 19, 2025.
In discussions with Indonesia’s Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of strengthening human resource capacities among Fijian healthcare providers. They also explored the possibility of leveraging the newly constructed 350-bed Jayapura Hospital to support Fiji’s healthcare system. In addition, the proposed sea ambulance initiative is expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility in Fiji’s maritime regions.
The collaborative spirit was echoed by Minister Lalabalavu, who expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s ongoing support and looks forward to welcoming Minister Sadikin to Fiji in October for the 76th Session of the WHO Regional Committee meeting, marking the first time Fiji will host this event. The Minister’s visit is supported by the Fiji Embassy in Jakarta and a delegation from Fiji.
This effort is aligned with broader regional strategies aimed at addressing healthcare challenges through international cooperation. Similar recent initiatives have involved high-level engagement between Fiji and other countries, including India and Pakistan, focusing on enhancing health services and building capacity in Fiji’s healthcare sector.
Such international cooperation underscores a hopeful future as both Fiji and Indonesia strive for enhanced mutual support in healthcare, ensuring better health outcomes for their populations. Continuing on this path of partnership and collaborative efforts, they stand to make meaningful advancements in health and wellness across the Pacific region.
