Fiji’s Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, recently engaged in a vital meeting with Jessica Hunter, Australia’s Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology. This meeting aimed to bolster cooperation between Fiji and Australia regarding digital transformation, cybersecurity, and critical technology initiatives.
In attendance were representatives from the Australian High Commission, including the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner, alongside Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Policing and Communications. The discussions revolved around the cybersecurity and digital transformation priorities as part of the ongoing Vuvale Partnership between the two nations.
Minister Naivalurua emphasized Fiji’s dedication to enhancing its national cybersecurity frameworks through the creation of a Cybersecurity and Resilience Strategy, as well as the establishment of Fiji’s Computer Emergency Response Team. This reflects Fiji’s proactive approach to securing its digital landscape.
Australia reiterated its commitment to aiding Fiji in various areas, including digital transformation, fostering the digital economy, and securing critical infrastructure. The dialogue also addressed the significant impact of artificial intelligence and the importance of collaboration between governments and industries to manage emerging technologies in a responsible manner, alongside the enhancement of digital literacy among the populace.
The meeting highlighted the pressing issues of online safety and social media regulation. Fiji acknowledged Australia’s recent measures to limit social media access for individuals under 16, showcasing a shared commitment to protecting younger users online. Additionally, the officials recognized the necessity of enhancing digital forensics and investigative capabilities within the Fiji Police Force, thereby strengthening overall security measures.
