Fiji Airways has made history by launching its first-ever flights into Cairns, Australia, establishing a direct service from Nadi that commenced on April 10, 2025. This new year-round route is set to revamp travel between Australia, Fiji, and North America, creating significant opportunities for both leisure and business travelers.
By significantly reducing travel time—almost three hours off previous flights—this route allows easier access to major cities in the United States such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Fiji Airways CEO, Andre Viljoen, emphasized the importance of this service, which also ensures seamless connections to Dallas/Fort Worth.
Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker highlighted the economic implications of this new service, expecting it to inject around $62 million into Cairns’ economy over the first three years. Additionally, this route is projected to bring in 53,000 seats annually, which can lead to a boost in international tourism, trade, and educational connections.
Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen added that this service would attract an expected 52,000 more U.S. tourists each year, potentially injecting over $160 million into the local economy and aiding in the region’s tourism growth. The new route, operating three times weekly, symbolizes a transformative moment not just for Fiji Airways but also for Cairns as a vibrant tourism destination.
Overall, this new direct service is a promising development that enhances travel options, further strengthens economic ties between the U.S., Australia, and Fiji, and underscores the commitment to expanding global connectivity in aviation. As international travel begins to rebound, Fiji Airways is positioning itself as a key player in facilitating these connections and driving economic growth in the region.
