The flight, initially set to depart on Saturday at 11:10 AM, was first postponed to 6:55 PM, then to 10:35 PM, and subsequently rescheduled to 1:45 AM on Sunday, before being canceled outright.
Affected travelers expressed their dissatisfaction as they found themselves stranded at the airport with only $30 meal vouchers provided by the airline, while no accommodation arrangements were made to ease their overnight ordeal.
In response to the situation, Fiji Airways released a statement acknowledging the significant inconvenience and frustration experienced by affected passengers. The airline confirmed that the delays were due to safety and unavoidable operational constraints that needed to be resolved prior to departure. Furthermore, they highlighted that the day of the incident was the busiest ever recorded in the airline’s history, which significantly affected communication capabilities during the disruption.
Fiji Airways stated that they had made efforts to secure hotel accommodations but found a limited number available due to the high travel demand during the Christmas season. Prioritization was given to elderly customers and families with young children in securing these accommodations.
Addressing the breakdown in communication, Fiji Airways expressed regret over the lack of timely updates and comforted passengers by announcing plans for future improvements.
