Fiji Airports is taking significant steps towards sustainability with the recent installation of solar-powered lighting and supply systems at Nadi International Airport and four major domestic airports. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to reduce carbon footprints and promote cleaner energy use across their operations.
CEO Mesake Nawari highlighted that this project aligns with Fiji’s goals for a transition to more sustainable energy sources. He pointed out the importance of improving energy efficiency and reducing operational costs, stating, “Our commitment to sustainability reflects our recognition of the critical impact of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases on climate change, and the urgent need for action.”
The solar installations include a 33-kilowatt hybrid system at Nadi that powers 14 electric vehicles (EVs) acquired last year. Solar panels have also been added at the airports in Labasa, Savusavu, Matei, and Rotuma, highlighting a wide-ranging environmental improvement plan. Nawari noted the importance of the transition to solar power, emphasizing that charging EVs with fossil fuel-based electricity contradicts sustainability goals.
Moreover, the airport’s street lighting has been switched to solar energy, amplifying the benefits of this initiative. A solar farm project is also underway with a goal of developing a 3.5-megawatt solar capacity that is expected to enhance renewable energy generation significantly.
These initiatives are part of Fiji Airports’ ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with international green airport frameworks. Their partnership with ITP Renewables Australia illustrates a strong commitment to these sustainable initiatives.
Through its continuous investments in renewable energy and electric vehicles, Fiji Airports is positioning itself as a leader in environmental sustainability within the aviation sector, benefiting local communities and contributing to global climate objectives. This commitment not only exemplifies Fiji’s dedication to sustainable practices but also serves as an inspiring model for airports throughout the Blue Pacific region, reinforcing the importance of innovative solutions in the fight against climate change.
