Fiji Acting DPP Responds to Calls for Resignation: No Direction to Step Down Given

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has stated that the calls for his resignation by the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society are attempts to encroach upon the Judicial Services Commission’s (JSC) role following the Supreme Court’s ruling last Friday.

Rabuka mentioned that he has met with the JSC twice this week and they have agreed on a way forward. He emphasized that there is an established process that must be followed to ensure the Office of the DPP continues to function effectively under his leadership, and that his departure will be as smooth as possible for the staff and overall operations.

Rabuku added that he has not received any directive from the JSC to step down from his acting role. He pointed out that while the Supreme Court, being the highest court in the land, has issued an opinion, his personal agreement with it is irrelevant, as the opinion needs to be respected.

He clarified that the opinion was not an order for him to immediately vacate his office, but rather to wait for the JSC to implement the appropriate procedures.
