Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance standards set by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as inspiration for the nation and the younger generation aspiring to represent Fiji. During a welcoming ceremony for the teams organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Tuwai acknowledged the support of family and loved ones.

While Tuwai recognized that the results did not meet the expectations, he emphasized the team’s potential to rebound. He began his speech with gratitude to God for guidance and protection during their preparation for the Olympics and upon their return.

He also expressed appreciation for coaches, management, and the moral support from families, thanking all those who stood behind the team during the campaign. Tuwai apologized for returning with a silver medal instead of gold, acknowledging the nation’s high hopes and expectations.

Spending a month away from loved ones was challenging, he stated. Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their accomplishments and recognized the coaches and management for their essential roles throughout the tournament.

The interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, Peter Mazey, described the event as a celebration of the teams’ remarkable achievements, which brought pride to Fiji. He recounted the team’s performance in Paris, highlighting their resilience and skill against tough competition.

Mazey noted that the athletes not only represented Fiji but also inspired future generations to aspire to wear the national jersey. He expressed pride in the team’s silver medal achievement at the Olympics, emphasizing the dedication and spirit of the nation reflected in their performance.

He thanked the coaching and medical staff for their unwavering commitment, emphasizing that the success of the young men was a collective effort. As the teams returned home, Mazey reiterated that the silver medal represented countless hours of hard work and sacrifices and encouraged continued support for future endeavors, reinforcing Fiji’s position as a powerhouse in rugby.

He urged the teams to take time with their families to recharge and prepare for upcoming challenges.
