Fiji 7s Squad Welcomes New Faces Ahead of Hong Kong Showdown!

Three new players have joined the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad as preparations ramp up for the upcoming Hong Kong 7s tournament. Isikeli Basiyalo and Aisea Nawai from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad, along with Apete Narogo from Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team, have received their call-ups to the national 7s setup.

Basiyalo, a 21-year-old forward, was training with the Fijian Drua when he received the unexpected news from head coach Glen Jackson that Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau wanted him in the squad. Expressing his excitement, Basiyalo remarked, “When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was actually happy and keen. I’ve always wanted to try sevens, so I’m glad to be here and learning a lot.”

Kolinisau noted that while the Drua players offer substantial power and speed, their selection is not guaranteed. He emphasized the need for them to fit into the squad dynamics. “I’ve been in contact with Glen Jackson. He needed some boys to get game time. It’s not a guarantee, we’ll have a look at them and see if they fit in,” Kolinisau stated.

Narogo, aged 23, earned his place after being recognized as the best player at the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s, showcasing impressive performances that caught the attention of national selectors.

As these newcomers compete for spots in the final squad, Fiji is determined to make a strong impact in Hong Kong. Kolinisau’s methodical approach to selecting players demonstrates not only the competitive spirit of the squad but also the ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging talent in Fijian rugby, which bodes well for the team’s future prospects.

Fans have every reason to be optimistic as these players, brimming with potential, prepare to represent Fiji in the high-stakes international arena.
