The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team is currently evaluating new talent as part of their training camp, which includes players from the Yaro Chiefs. Head coach Osea Kolinisau welcomed Wame Ratuva and Tomasi Stark into the extended squad during a training session held at Albert Park in Suva on Tuesday. This decision reflects the team’s commitment to exploring fresh prospects who can contribute to the team’s success.

Kolinisau highlighted the outstanding performances of Ratuva and Stark, particularly at the recent Coral Coast tournament, and expressed his eagerness to see how they measure up against the existing squad members. “It’s always open, always watching the games,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of competition within the team. He pointed out that several players who participated in the previous tournament in Singapore did not compete in Coral Coast, presenting an opportunity for the newcomers to showcase their abilities.

The head coach has made it clear that the selection process for the upcoming tournament in Vancouver, Canada, is competitive. He encouraged all players to bring their unique strengths to the training sessions, making it a platform where only the best performers will earn their spot. “If you’re not going to compete in here, you’re wasting our time,” Kolinisau stated, underlining the seriousness of the selection process.

While the absence of certain familiar players does not spell the end of their national careers, Kolinisau emphasized that hard work and dedication are essential for those aiming to return to the national team.

This approach not only injects fresh energy into the squad but also cultivates a culture of competition, pushing each player to strive for excellence. The inclusive nature of this training phase bodes well for the team’s future, as they prepare for upcoming international challenges.
