The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team is diligently preparing for the upcoming Singapore 7s, marking the third leg of the HSBC Sevens Series. After a commendable performance at the Cape Town 7s, where they secured third place by defeating France 26-19, the team is aiming to build on this momentum.
Training sessions have been ongoing, with the players remaining committed to their fitness and skill development, even during the festive season. The team’s preparations took place yesterday at Albert Park in Suva, under the guidance of Coach Osea Kolinisau, who highlighted the necessity of delivering top-notch performances in the upcoming tournaments.
One of the standout players vying for a spot on the team is 25-year-old Isaia Rugu from Nadrala, Nadroga. Rugu, who has long dreamed of representing Fiji in rugby, began his journey at the Malolo Rugby team, which recently clinched the Skipper Cup title. He expressed his gratitude for the journey thus far and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.
“It has been a great journey so far; God has been part of my journey. I’m grateful for the lessons and the talent I have to represent my country,” Rugu stated. He reflected on how he has come from humble beginnings in rugby and emphasized that reaching this point is just the start of his aspirations. Motivated to continue improving, he is aware of the stiff competition for a place on the team for the Singapore 7s but remains determined to give his best if given the opportunity.
The Singapore 7s is scheduled to take place from January 31 to February 1, serving as a pivotal moment for the team as they seek to enhance their standing in the series.
