Fiji Airways Fiji 7s men’s team captain Jerry Matana has emphasized the importance of seriousness as the team gears up for the Singapore 7s tournament starting today. Matana expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, noting, “We have prepared well. All the fun and jokes are over now, and it’s about executing all those things we’ve learned during the training sessions.”
The captain acknowledged the tough competition for spots in the final team, stating that every player is fully aware of the talent available in the extended squad. Each member of the final lineup has earned their place, marking a personal achievement for them. Matana also called on fans for their support as the tournament kicks off, saying, “Our fans are our biggest motivation, so I urge them to please pray for the boys. It’s not going to be easy, but I can assure everyone that the boys will put their body on the line on game day.” Fiji is looking to defend its title after winning the championship last year by defeating Kenya in the final. The nation has previously secured the Singapore title four times.
Adding to the anticipation, Fiji Airways men’s 7s coach Osea Kolinisau acknowledged the pressure that comes with representing Fiji on the rugby field. “There will always be pressure,” Kolinisau stated, highlighting that expectations are high whenever the national team competes. He emphasized the importance of turning that pressure into a positive force on the field, noting that success in the rugby series demands hard work and dedication.
Fiji, currently joint leaders of the series, is mindful of the spotlight on them as they embark on their quest for victory. “We know a lot of eyes will be on us, so we just have to stay humble,” Kolinisau remarked. The 7s team is set to face a challenging pool, competing against Spain, Great Britain, and South Africa. Their opening match is against Great Britain at 4:32 PM, followed by encounters with Spain at 7:58 PM and South Africa at 11:46 PM.
In parallel, the Fijiana side is also making its debut against Australia at 3:26 PM, with subsequent matches against the USA at 6:30 PM and Japan at 10:18 PM. The upcoming games provide a significant opportunity for both teams to showcase their skill and determination as they pursue success on the international stage.
