Cancer continues to be a significant public health issue, as emphasized by Health and Medical Services Assistant Minister Penioni Ravunawa during a recent 5-kilometre awareness walk organized by the Fiji Cancer Society in Suva. Mr. Ravunawa highlighted that the initiative underscores the urgent need for awareness surrounding a disease that has taken many lives in Fiji.

During his address, Mr. Ravunawa stated, “Today’s cancer awareness walk sends a clear message: cancer remains a serious public health concern, but early detection and healthier lifestyles can save lives.” He urged the public to prioritize regular screenings, recognize the warning signs of cancer, and seek medical assistance promptly, reinforcing the collective obligation of the nation to combat this disease.

In Lautoka, community spirit was evident as a similar event took place, organized by the FSC western branch with participants walking 5 kilometres from Shirley Park. Litia Qoro, the branch’s events and advocacy coordinator, expressed gratitude for the support received from both public and private organizations in the fight against cancer. Despite cloudy weather conditions, families and supporters rallied together, showcasing solidarity in this important cause.

The Lautoka event resonated with this year’s global theme, “United by Unique,” which celebrates the diverse experiences of cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Such events not only promote awareness but also foster a sense of community unity in facing the challenges posed by cancer.
