A newly built futsal court at AD Patel College, funded by FIFA’s global Arena initiative, will be officially opened tomorrow, marking the latest step in Fiji’s drive to expand grassroots football and futsal infrastructure. The facility—constructed to provide a safe, accessible space for small-sided football—was delivered under a FIFA legacy program launched at the organisation’s 75th Congress and aligns with national efforts to grow the game among school-age players.
The FIFA Arena initiative, promoted under the vision of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, seeks to establish mini-football pitches in underserved communities across the world. FIFA has framed the project as inclusive of all 211 member associations, prioritising locations where access to quality sporting facilities is limited; the AD Patel College court is one of the first tangible outcomes of that commitment in Fiji. Officials say the court is expected to serve students and local residents as both a training and competition venue.
Mohammed Yusuf, chief executive officer of the Fiji Football Association, welcomed the new court as an important investment in grassroots development. “This futsal court is another important investment in grassroots football. Facilities like this provide young players with a safe and modern environment to learn and enjoy the game, while helping us grow futsal and football participation within schools and communities,” Yusuf said, underscoring the role of infrastructure in nurturing talent and widening participation.
The opening ceremony tomorrow will bring together students and teachers from AD Patel College, alongside football officials and community members. Organisers expect the venue to be used for school-based activities, local futsal competitions and coaching programmes, and to complement the Fiji FA’s broader youth development plans. No further programme details for the ceremony have been released beyond the planned attendance of school and community stakeholders.
The new court arrives as part of a broader push by the Fiji FA to institutionalise futsal at the school level. Earlier this year the association launched school futsal leagues for under-17 and under-19 boys and girls and has been running coaching courses across divisions to raise the standard of futsal instruction nationally. Those initiatives focused on zonal competition structures and support measures—including transport subsidies for schools—to make participation more feasible for remote institutions, and the AD Patel facility is expected to host fixtures and training tied to those programmes.
FIFA’s funding and the opening of this court signal sustained international support for local development work and add to a growing base of facilities that the Fiji FA can use to broaden competition pathways. For students at AD Patel College and nearby communities, the court represents both immediate access to a modern playing surface and a potential stepping stone for young players into organised futsal and football pathways.
