Kuliniasi Saumi, the recently dismissed Manager of Investigations at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has been granted access to essential documents at the FICAC office. This access is critical as he prepares to provide evidence in the ongoing case involving FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Senior Barrister Janet Mason confirmed this development following assurances from Acting Deputy FICAC Commissioner Lisiate Fotofili, who also granted access to two other witnesses involved in Malimali’s case.

The inquiry revolving around Malimali’s appointment is set to resume today and will continue until Friday, featuring the recall of Chief Justice Salesi Temo and Chief Registrar for cross-examination. Malimali is currently on leave for three weeks at the request of the Judicial Services Commission, which has raised various concerns regarding her role amidst ongoing allegations of misconduct.

This situation follows intense scrutiny of how evidence has been managed within FICAC, including complaints from Mason about Malimali’s practice of vetting information before it is presented at the inquiry. Such actions have sparked fears about the integrity of witness testimonies, highlighting the necessity for unbiased access to documents for those involved in the inquiry.

As the Commission of Inquiry (COI) progresses, observers remain hopeful that the proceedings will facilitate the implementation of vital reforms within Fiji’s governance structure, reinforcing the principles of transparency and accountability. The developments not only signal an effort to address corruption more effectively but also represent a critical juncture for restoring public trust in governmental institutions designed to uphold integrity. The commitment of relevant authorities to oversee these processes illustrates the potential for positive transformation within Fiji’s legal and political landscape.
