The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) has revised the charges against Suva-based lawyer Tanya Waqanika. She appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning.
Waqanika faces allegations under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013, specifically for publicly expressing opposition to a political party. The charges relate to her comments made on a Facebook post dated April 19, 2024, where she reportedly posted remarks opposing the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), while serving in her capacity as a public officer on the boards of Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited.
FICAC lawyer Rusiate Doidoi provided additional disclosures during the proceedings. Waqanika is scheduled to enter her plea at her next court appearance on the 24th of next month.
This case highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding political expression and accountability among public officials in Fiji. The outcomes of such proceedings could significantly influence public perceptions of political engagement and governance.
