The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has established a special taskforce to probe the results of a recent audit concerning Walesi. This development follows the receipt of the audit report from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica.

During a session in Parliament, it was disclosed that the government allocated a substantial amount of $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project, which pertains to the operations of Walesi PTE LTD from 2015 to 2022. Recognizing the significance of this matter, FICAC stated that it represents a situation of national interest.

Commissioner Barbara Malimali has tasked the special taskforce, led by Assistant Manager of Investigation within the Economic Crimes Unit, Alifereti Wakanivesi, to initiate investigations immediately.

This investigation demonstrates Fiji’s commitment to transparency and accountability within its governmental sectors. The attention to the Walesi project indicates a proactive approach to ensuring public resources are managed responsibly and that any potential discrepancies are thoroughly examined.

In summary, FICAC’s new taskforce aims to investigate the potential irregularities in the substantial funding for Walesi, which could pave the way for greater fiscal responsibility and improved governance in Fiji. This step signals a hopeful direction toward eradicating corruption and strengthening democratic processes in the region.
