The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting investigations without bias, ensuring that all actions are based on substantial evidence. This statement comes in light of remarks made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu concerning former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya.

According to FICAC, they received a complaint from the Supervisor of Elections on April 5, 2024, alleging that Ms. Tabuya had not disclosed her spouse’s income and business associations as required by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an investigation was authorized on April 24, 2024, which revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, investigators recommended the case be closed by August 5, 2024, which was officially done by former acting Deputy Commissioner Ms. Francis Puleiwai on August 12, with the closure communicated to the Supervisor of Elections on September 20.

FICAC addressed Seruiratu’s concerns regarding Ms. Barbara Malimali, who now serves as the FICAC Commissioner. They clarified that the investigation into Tabuya’s case was concluded prior to Malimali’s appointment and rejected any insinuations that she might have influenced the outcome.

In their response, FICAC urged the public and leaders to exercise caution and verify the facts before making statements that could undermine the Commission’s work.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, as well as the role of independent bodies like FICAC in maintaining the integrity of political processes. It also serves as a reminder to political figures to be mindful of the impact of their statements on public trust in such institutions.

Overall, FICAC’s dedication to impartiality and evidence-based actions fosters an environment conducive to honest governance, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
