Acting Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Lavi Rokoika has firmly asserted that the commission is not being influenced or “weaponised” to target political figures. During a press conference, she addressed public concerns and media commentary regarding the organization’s independence, emphasizing that its decisions are guided by internal checks and balances rather than dictated by any individual.
Rokoika responded directly to allegations aimed at FICAC, stating, “The answer is no — we have not been weaponised. We do not take our instructions from anyone in government or in Parliament. That is why we have systems in place.” She highlighted that every complaint the commission receives undergoes multiple layers of legal and investigative review to ensure impartiality.
“The ultimate decision comes to the Office of the Commissioner, but many individuals within the organization participate in the handling of each case,” Rokoika explained. “Our internal processes are designed to prevent a single individual from having the final say, ensuring there are many checks and balances to protect us from any perceptions of bias.”
She also addressed queries regarding the legality of her own appointment but refrained from commenting due to ongoing court proceedings. “There are lawful processes in place to deal with questions about it,” she stated. “It is currently before the courts, therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment.”
Rokoika reiterated FICAC’s commitment to uphold its mandate through established procedures, assuring the public of the commission’s dedication to transparency and independence in its operations. As the agency navigates its role in combating corruption, the emphasis on procedural integrity and impartial decision-making is pivotal in maintaining public trust.
