Beyond the headline

The Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) formally launched its 2026 congress at a ceremony in Suva, announcing the event will be held on May 8–9, 2026 at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi and unveiling significant corporate backing. At the launch, FICA president Sharvek Naidu received major sponsorship cheques of $60,000 each from Vodafone Fiji and Asco Motors, and a $33,750 contribution from gold sponsor Extra Supermarket, underscoring strong private-sector support for the two-day conference. Bronze sponsorships were also confirmed from Marsh and Merchant Finance.

Naidu said the congress, themed “Charting new horizons for a changing world,” is a deliberate response to accelerating global change. “We are operating in a world defined by rapid technological disruption, shifting geopolitical dynamics, climate challenges, and evolving expectations of business and leadership,” he told attendees at the Holiday Inn launch in Suva. “For Fiji, and for our profession, the question is no longer whether change will come but how we will position ourselves to lead through it.”

FICA’s announcement makes clear the event will feature a mix of local and international expertise. Naidu said the programme is being designed to include speakers, thought leaders and policymakers who will “challenge our thinking and expand our perspectives,” signalling sessions aimed at both technical accounting issues and broader strategic topics such as digital transformation, sustainability and regulatory change. The institute has not yet released a speaker list or an agenda, but said further details would be shared as they are confirmed.

The sponsorship receipts revealed at the launch amount to $153,750 from the three headline supporters, with additional funds pledged by bronze sponsors. Naidu framed the corporate commitments as validation of the congress’s growing profile: past FICA congresses, he said, “have been successful,” and the 2026 event is intended to build on that momentum with “greater ambition.” The move to Crowne Plaza in Nadi, a hub for international travelers, suggests organisers are positioning the congress to attract a wider regional and overseas attendance.

Organisers emphasised that the congress is not merely a technical conference for accountants but a platform for business leaders, advisors and policymakers to explore cross-cutting challenges facing Fiji and the region. With topics flagged around climate and technological disruption, the forum is likely to intersect with national conversations on economic resilience and regulatory responses ahead of the 2026 political calendar.

Registrations, detailed programme items and confirmed international speakers were not announced at the launch. FICA said logistical and programme information will be released in the coming weeks as it finalises partnerships and speaker confirmations for the May 8–9 congress in Nadi.
