The National Fire Authority (NFA) is advising the community to remain vigilant during the festive season following three separate fire incidents reported on Friday in the regions of Tavua, Lautoka, and Nadi.

Acting NFA Chief Executive Joel Israel announced that investigations into these incidents are underway, with preliminary findings expected shortly. He praised the quick response of firefighters who managed to control the fires effectively, preventing them from spreading to neighboring residences.

In Nadi, a two-bedroom home at Nawejikuma Settlement, Nawaka, was completely destroyed after it was discovered engulfed in flames late in the evening. The vacant structure suffered severe damage.

Earlier in the day, a fire at the Tavua Police Barracks led to the destruction of a two-bedroom flat; however, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from affecting another adjacent unit. In Lautoka, a one-bedroom house in Lomolomo Village was also lost to flames, although the occupants managed to escape safely.

Israel highlighted an alarming trend in the occurrence of house fires, particularly during periods when the properties are unoccupied. He emphasized the importance of adhering to fundamental fire safety measures, urging residents to notify their neighbors when leaving their homes, disconnect unused electrical appliances, store flammable materials properly, and ensure gas cylinders are switched off.

The NFA further reminded the public to call 910 immediately at the first sign of a fire and to refrain from attempting to extinguish the flames themselves. Prompt reporting is critical for minimizing potential loss of life and limiting property damage.

This call to action reinforces the necessity of fire safety practices in order to protect lives and property, particularly during a season that traditionally sees increased risk.
