Police are intensifying their efforts to combat illegal drug activities during the festive season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu has issued a firm warning to individuals suspected of drug involvement, stating, “We are targeting anyone suspected of drugs.”
During this busy holiday period, police will be monitoring known drug hotspots as well as conducting searches of suspected vehicles and vessels. ACP Driu noted that drug arrests are being made daily, with operations ramping up to tackle the illegal trade more effectively.
The most recent arrest took place near the Nadonumai roundabout in Lami, outside Suva, when a vehicle was stopped during a routine check. The driver allegedly threatened the officer, leading to a deeper investigation. With the help of the K-9 Unit, police discovered a plastic wrap containing five dried branches and leaves believed to be marijuana. A search of the suspect’s home uncovered a zip-lock bag with additional dried leaves, also thought to be marijuana. The suspect is now in custody at the Lami Police Station for further inquiry.
ACP Driu reiterated that this operation is part of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to reduce drug-related crimes, especially during the festive season. He has encouraged the public to support the police in their fight against drug offenses.
This proactive approach by the police aims to create a safer environment for the community during a time traditionally associated with celebration. By increasing vigilance and community involvement, there is hope that drug-related issues can be significantly diminished, fostering a more positive and secure holiday atmosphere for everyone.
