Goundar Shipping Ltd has issued a warning that it may withdraw its maritime services if the approval and registration of its high-speed ferry, the Captain Inoke, are not finalized soon. Joeli Cawaki, CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), confirmed that ongoing discussions have taken place regarding the matter, with the ferry currently immobilized due to unresolved regulatory issues.
Cawaki stated that the ferry, which has encountered significant scrutiny regarding its seaworthiness, was found to have over 20 cracks in its aluminum hull after arriving from Korea. The vessel, which is 27 years old, was inspected and cracks were repaired by a local company, Blue Water. “If it’s to carry our people, we need to prioritize safety,” Cawaki explained, and emphasized that specific conditions must be met before the vessel can be listed for operation.
Despite the difficulties, there is a push for reform as Fiji seeks to implement the High-Speed Craft Code, aimed at enhancing safety regulations for such vessels. The domestication of this code and subsequent training of local personnel could lead to a more robust framework for high-speed maritime operations in Fiji.
Past reports also highlighted the investments made by Goundar Shipping, with the managing director, George Goundar, expressing his commitment to improving local ferry services. The $7 million investment in the Captain Inoke indicates a dedication to enhancing maritime connectivity for residents and visitors.
While the challenges posed by regulatory frameworks and safety assessments remain a hurdle, there is a positive outlook for the determined efforts to resolve these issues. Ultimately, the successful registration of the Captain Inoke could pave the way for improved transportation services in Fiji, benefiting both local economies and tourism.
Goundar’s initiative reflects a hopeful vision for the future of maritime services in Fiji, with prospects for better connectivity and enhanced community support once regulatory hurdles are overcome.
