The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to avoid exploiting consumers during the holiday season. Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized the importance of ethical practices, warning that the FCCC will take strict measures against any trader involved in price gouging, misleading promotions, or unfair practices.

Abraham stated, “Let us work together to uphold fairness and ensure that the festive spirit is not marred by unethical practices.” He highlighted that in preparation for Christmas, the FCCC has been actively conducting inspections to protect consumers. In November alone, the commission carried out over 700 inspections, focusing on identifying and preventing deceptive practices and excessive pricing.

The inspections revealed 44 potential breaches, which included issues such as overcharging and failure to properly display prices or adjust them according to duty and VAT reductions. The FCCC plans to take appropriate enforcement actions against violators, which could range from issuing warning letters to placing businesses under surveillance or pursuing legal action.

So far this month, the Commission has already conducted 417 inspections in anticipation of the holiday shopping rush, ensuring that traders comply with fair trading practices and keeping consumer interests at the forefront.

Abraham also reminded the community that the festive season should be a time for kindness and support, encouraging individuals to check in on vulnerable members of society. He suggested that simple gestures of kindness, such as sharing meals or offering companionship, can profoundly impact those who may be less fortunate.

This article serves as a reminder that the holiday season should be a time of joy and fairness, where consumers can shop with confidence, and communities come together to support one another.
