The father of a 14-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a vehicle accident in Nabua, Suva, is calling for justice following this devastating incident. Nazim Ali, a minibus driver and father of four, was working in Lautoka when he received the heartbreaking news about his son’s accident.
Ali recounted the distressing moment he learned of his son’s fate. He was en route back to Suva when he received a call from the police, informing him that his son had been involved in an accident. Rushing to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in hopes of seeing his son, he learned that medical efforts to save him had failed due to severe blood loss caused by the injuries sustained in the collision.
The young boy, a student at Suva Muslim Primary School, did not arrive at school on the day of the accident, and his family remains unaware of how he ended up at the scene. Ali fondly recalled times spent with his son, particularly their weekly tradition of cutting grass at the old Nasinu Cemetery.
Despite police reports indicating that the driver of the vehicle was sober when the crash occurred, Ali suspects otherwise. He expressed his frustration over pressures to settle the matter out of court, insisting instead on seeking justice for his son. “I’m after justice for my son,” he affirmed.
This tragic case underscores a broader concern about road safety, particularly relating to the vulnerability of young pedestrians. A similar tragic incident earlier highlighted that road fatalities involving minors have been rising, prompting calls from authorities, including Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, for greater adherence to road safety regulations.
In light of these tragic events, there is a hopeful community push aimed at enhancing road safety measures and practices to protect more lives. The community can rally to advocate for better safety protocols, educate drivers, and create safer environments, especially for children.
As families navigate through the mourning process, the support from the community can help uplift those affected by such tragedies while inspiring a commitment to higher safety standards on the roads.
