The rise in road accidents involving buses and public service vehicles has become a major concern. In response, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Transport, has announced that show cause proceedings will be initiated to tackle reckless driving behaviors in a bid to prevent further tragedies.

This announcement follows a recent bus accident near Lekutulevu in Bulileka, where a driver lost control of the vehicle, veering off a bridge and injuring seven passengers. Fortunately, initial reports indicated that only one of the passengers, a student, sustained minor injuries and received necessary treatment at Labasa Hospital. Investigations are still ongoing.

Minister Tuisawau stressed the importance of prioritizing the safety of passengers and other road users, urging all public service vehicles to adhere strictly to speed limits and to maintain control of their vehicles. He expressed that compliance with traffic laws is non-negotiable, emphasizing that every driver and operator must uphold the highest safety standards.

To bolster safety initiatives, the Minister outlined plans to enhance focus and resources related to driver licensing and testing through the Land Transport Authority. Additionally, there will be increased efforts towards road safety education, awareness campaigns, and the enforcement of vehicle inspections to address the rising trend of accidents and fatalities.

This ongoing focus on public service vehicle safety reflects a commitment to protecting the community. By fostering a culture of responsibility among drivers and promoting adherence to safety regulations, there is hope for a future where fewer accidents occur, contributing to safer travel for everyone. The community and officials alike are optimistic that through coordinated efforts, improved training, and strict enforcement, road safety can be significantly enhanced.
