In the serene highlands of Namosi, the Mataqali Rovadrau community is establishing a commendable legacy centered on sustainable agriculture and resilience. This initiative traces its roots back to the elders, who dreamed of better futures for their people after relocating from Wainimala in Naitasiri. Their steadfast vision has blossomed into a thriving communal farm, driven by unity, perseverance, and a commitment to nurturing future generations.

Kitione, a proud member of the Mataqali, reflects on this journey, noting, “Our elders dreamed of a future where our people could thrive on their own land.” The journey began in the early 2000s when the clan took the initiative to lease 300 acres of untouched forest. Over the years, they cleared and cultivated more than 200 acres using traditional methods, eschewing chemicals in favor of community-driven, organic farming practices.

Farming officially commenced in 2005, and a significant turning point came in 2013 when they expanded into livestock. Starting with just 25 cows and one bull, the community now boasts a herd of 105 cattle, which serve as essential lifelines, supporting education, food security, and financial stability.

Despite facing challenges such as the lack of proper access roads, which complicates the transportation of goods, the Mataqali remains undeterred. A pivotal development occurred under the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways’ Commercial Agriculture Development Program in 2022 when they received $5,000 in stockyard materials. With the help of villagers who traversed challenging terrain to deliver these materials, the community laid the groundwork for improved livestock management.

Livestock Officer Vishwesh Waran praised their hard work, stating, “The materials are just the beginning. They’ll help reduce the physical burden and improve cattle handling.” This support signifies a significant step toward building a sustainable future.

Looking forward, the Mataqali is preparing for modernization. They have acquired a twin-cab vehicle and aim for formal business registration to enhance their operations further. Kitione captured the spirit of their aspirations beautifully: “If you have land and animals, you have wealth. We want our youth to see this and dream big.”

The success of Mataqali Rovadrau echoes with similar narratives across Fiji, where young individuals like Petero Maciu are advocating for the use of idle land to create sustainable livelihoods, highlighting the importance of agriculture in fostering economic stability and self-reliance. Maciu, who has seen remarkable success from cultivating yaqona and other crops, inspires his peers to embrace farming not only for survival but for prosperity.

Through dedication and collaboration, the Mataqali Rovadrau demonstrates a hopeful narrative of community-driven agriculture aimed at creating a brighter tomorrow. Their journey serves as a reminder of the power of sustainable practices and the potential they hold for transforming lives.
