Intensive sugar cane production on Vanua Levu has raised concerns about declining yields and the long-term viability of farming in the region, according to a study conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The research, which spans over three decades, highlights detrimental changes to topsoil properties due to relentless farming practices, negatively impacting sugarcane growth.

The study reveals that approximately 900 farmers surveyed are aware of how climate hazards, particularly tropical cyclones and floods, have disrupted their livelihoods. Many farmers considering leaving the sugarcane sector reported experiencing a notable decline in their ability to recover following such climate events.

Although the total number of tropical cyclones has decreased over the last 40 years in the Pacific, the intensity of these storms has increased, compounding the existing challenges faced by the sugar industry. The situation is further aggravated by broader issues affecting agricultural productivity, including labor shortages and underinvestment in sustainable practices.

In previous analyses, similar findings have emerged, exacerbating the sugar industry’s struggle to maintain production levels essential for economic stability. Factors such as high input costs, logistical obstacles in harvesting, and fluctuating sugar prices have hindered profitability, pushing some farmers to contemplate leaving the industry altogether.

However, there’s a silver lining. The FAO study suggests a shift towards sustainable practices and alternative revenue streams, such as ethanol production and biomass cogeneration, that could rejuvenate the sugar sector. Collaborative efforts between farmers, government agencies, and stakeholders are essential to implement these innovative solutions and enhance resilience to climate change.

In summary, while the challenges facing the sugar industry on Vanua Levu are significant, the potential for recovery through sustainable practices and community engagement offers optimism for the future. The path ahead requires strategic action and commitment from all involved, ensuring the preservation and revitalization of this vital agricultural sector in Fiji.
