Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Vimal Dutt has urged sugarcane farmers to wisely manage their finances following the announcement of the fourth cane payment of $17.03 per tonne, alongside a special one-off payment of $5 per tonne funded by the government, to be distributed before May 30. He praised the government for their timely support, which comes as farmers prepare for the 2025 crushing season.

Mr. Dutt emphasized the importance of budgeting and planning, encouraging farmers to utilize these payments effectively to prevent any financial shortfalls. He also expressed optimism for the upcoming season, urging farmers to take advantage of favorable weather conditions for harvesting. “Never give up hope,” he stated, acknowledging their longstanding contributions to the sugar industry.

However, some farmers, like Rajesh Kumar from Tovata, have voiced concerns that even with early payments, they may not meet their essential expenses due to rising costs of living and difficulties in securing labor for harvesting. Kumar collaborates with about 200 tonnes of cane from his 10-acre farm, reflecting the challenges many face in the industry.

These sentiments echo recent discussions in the agricultural community about the ongoing financial pressures faced by sugarcane farmers in Fiji. The government’s commitment to support, combined with the additional special payment, aims to help farmers adapt to the economic challenges presented by high production costs and labor shortages witnessed in recent harvest seasons.

With the combined government support, there remains cautious optimism within the farming community. Stakeholders believe that these payments, alongside better weather and improved agricultural practices, could provide a vital lifeline and foster resilience within the sugar industry. The proactive engagement between farmers and the government highlights a collaborative effort that could enhance stability and growth in this essential sector.
